Angela Joens has gained extensive management, development and stewardship experience during her professional career. Areas of expertise include fundraising, strategic planning, market research, event planning, giving societies, donor communication and staff recruitment, development and management.
Ms. Joens is currently the vice president of development operations for the Mercy Foundation in Des Moines, IA where she oversees donor relations, annual giving, gift processing, database management, and the grateful patient program. The Mercy Foundation raises money for Mercy Medical Center, Mercy College of Health Sciences, Bishop Drumm Retirement Center, House of Mercy (an addiction treatment facility for women and their children) and Hospice.
Prior to her work with the Mercy Foundation, Ms. Joens served as the overall senior director of donor relations for the Iowa State University Foundation for ten years and helped the Foundation build a nationally recognized program from the ground up. Before that she was a member of the start-up company RuffaloCODY, which assists nonprofit organizations across the country with their fundraising efforts. Serving the company for eight years, she helped hundreds of clients reach their financial goals and helped build a strong company.
Ms. Joens began her career as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society in 1988. She successfully introduced several new fundraising events, managed special events operations for 16 regional fundraisers, solicited corporate sponsors and was a featured speaker at state and national conferences.
Ms. Joens continues to be a frequent speaker and has presented at many conferences, including those for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the Big 12 development professionals and an Iowa-wide fundraising institute. She, along with her team of colleagues, has been recognized by CASE District Award Committees.
Ms. Joens earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communications from the University of Iowa and her Master of Public Administration at Iowa State University. She is active in Des Moines and with several nonprofit organizations in central Iowa and currently serves nationally on the board of the Association of Donor Relations Professionals.
